It is important to Dr. Hoskinson and his team at Hoskinson Orthodontics that our patients understand all aspects of their orthodontic treatment. For our prospective patients who are interested in Schenectady, NY Invisalign and Invisalign Teen, we’ve put together the following commonly asked questions about this popular treatment method that uses a series of clear, removable aligners to move teeth.
Over the course of treatment, you will be given a series of aligners. Each one will make slight adjustments to tooth position, a process that is planned out in advance, specifically to meet your needs. When wearing the aligners, they put consistent pressure on the teeth, causing them to shift from their current positions. After approximately 2 weeks, you will move on to the next set of aligners in the series and so on until your teeth are correctly aligned according to the precise treatment plan developed by Dr. Hoskinson.
The length of treatment depends upon each patient’s individual case and complexity. However, the average Invisalign case takes about 12-18 months.
Invisalign Teen is just like regular Invisalign but with a couple of notable differences. Invisalign Teen aligners come with tiny compliance indicators which fade as the aligners are worn to tell the patient, parents and orthodontist whether the aligners are being worn as directed. The aligners also have ‘eruption tabs’ built right in which hold space for permanent teeth that have yet to erupt through the gums.
No. The aligners are designed to be removed when eating and drinking. You can continue to enjoy all your favorite foods while you’re improving your smile with Invisalign including hard, chewy and crunchy foods. (Although, our patients who have attachments on their teeth with Invisalign treatment do need to be careful eating crunchy foods)
In order for Invisalign to work as it should, the aligners must be worn for 22+ hours each day. They should only be taken out when eating & drinking and when brushing & flossing. In addition, if you play a contact sport it is recommended to remove aligners during the activity.
Simply brush the aligners gently using a small dab of toothpaste and a soft bristled toothbrush and then rinse them off when done. A good time to clean your aligners is when you are brushing and flossing your teeth. Never use hot water when cleaning the aligners as doing so can warp the plastic which would render the aligners unwearable.
Teens and adults improving their smiles with Invisalign enjoy the fact that the aligners are virtually invisible, giving them confidence to smile broadly throughout the course of their treatment. Another much loved feature of Invisalign is the fact that there are no restrictions put on what you can eat as you simply take the aligners out to eat meals and snacks and then just pop them back in when done. And since there are no wires to tighten and adjust, Invisalign patients enjoy having to make fewer orthodontic appointments over the course of their treatment.
Yes. You will need to wear a retainer according to the directions we give you at the time to ensure that your teeth remain in their new positions.

This is a SPECIAL ALERT:
The NYS Dental Association has closely monitored all developments with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
As we are aware the COVID-19 situation in New York is one of the most serious in the nation. At this time it is highly recommended that dental offices only provide emergency care for our patients; and close for a minimum of 3 weeks. As a professional office we want to be responsible and slow the spread of COVID-19. We will follow this urgent recommendation- the office will be closed for patient care starting Wednesday 3/18/2020. As of now the office plans to tentatively reopen 4/13/2020. Dr. Hoskinson will be available to see emergency patients – a patient experiencing discomfort. The office will reach out to our patients and reschedule all appointments once we know an exact date for reopening.
This is an extremely fluid, unprecedented event in our country. We are being faced with many unknowns and personal challenges at this time.
Happy & Healthy Wishes to all,
